You can buy the spindle adapters from most of the big F100 vendors for about $100, then you can source the other stuff from local parts houses (new) or junkyards (used). Plus you save on shipping costs for a pair of rotors, loaded calipers, etc. LMK if you need more info.
I installed a front disc brake setup on my 51 in June. I Thought I would be smart and just purchase the mounting kit because that was the only way to get the spindle adaptor. The rest of the kit (Rotors, Calipers, Bearings, Ect.) I purchased from Schucks. I didn't want to mail order the braided lines because I was not sure they would be the right length. I ordered them from a local speed shop took me 4 trips to get them to actually order them. When I added up the total cost of the purchase I discovered I only saved $40.00 over what I could have purchased a conversion kit. All the running around and trouble piecing it together was not worth the $40.00 I saved, now that I look back.
I go the kit over 9 years ago but however, I know it would have been less money for just the adapter and bracket. You also have to look at changing to a power M/C and a floor or firewall pedal which cost me $600 without the firewall mounting bracket & pedal which was $350 from Industrial chasis. The price now is probably well over a grand so I'll say you'll save with the salvage yard unless your local yard has outrageous prices.
Jaye
Jaye, how did the power master cylinder work out for you. After reading the Bonusbuilt.com article about his experience with a power setup I decided to go with a manual 1" cylinder. I haven't had the truck on the hwy yet just around the neighborhood, and it seems to have a good pedal and stopping.
What do you condsider cheap? I got the setup for my 1950 front discs for less then $500.00 that includes brake hoses and pads. Price a rebuild of a stock setup not that much of a diffrence. Especially if you need new hubs.
