Yesterday while driving to work my volt gauge went from normal operating range to the max 18!! When I let the truck idle it falls back to normal and when I rev the engine it swings back to 18, now this morning it wont start at all. Is it the alternator that is allowing the battery to overcharge? If its overcharged why wont it start? When I drove home yesterday the gauge stayed in the normal range. Is it possibke the alternator overcharged the battery enough to get me home, but the battery lost its charge during the drive and was almost dead when I got home?
If it's pegging the voltmeter when you rev it the voltage regulator is probably going out. If it does that often it could boil the battery, which distorts the plates and shorts it out. I 'd get the battery and alternator tested and see what condition they're in.
Failed Rectifier pack. It's internal to the alternator, so you'll have to change it. It converts a.c. voltage to d.c.voltage This allows a brushless alternator vice a generator.

Reason: incomplete info
Both the rectifier and the regulator can cause this problem. The battery is propably cooked, but maybe not. If the regulator is bad, it might constantly feed power to the rotor even though the ignition is off, and deplete the battery overnight. Get the battery charged and load tested (unless it's four or more years old... then it might pass the load test and fail weeks later from the shock it's been through) and replace the alternator.
