I have been reading threads round here and at the DieselStop forums and its tellin me Autolite Glow plugs are a good way to be stuck in the cold with a no start. I have not replaced the glow plugs in the truck except for one which was an Autolite and they all test good. It is hard to start the first time in the morning even when its only about 40f. SHould I replace them all with Motorcrafts? Whats the price on a Motorcraft GP?
The best GP is Buru which are the motorcraft brand its the only thing I use. You stay away from Autolite and Champion the other decent brand if you can't use Motorcraft is Bosch.
A broken GP that drops into your precup then into the cylinder is disasterous your pulling the head to get the pieces out.
The glow plug will just melt and drop into the clylinder head or is it when you take them out?
I assume that a Beru gp is about the same price as any other$
What happens is the GP tip bangs around in the cylinder and busts up your valves and damages the pistons. The tip breaks off when you try take the old GP out because the head of it swells up.
The Ford dealer sells them you may have to order them old IDI parts are getting hard to come by.
I bought mine at the International dealer. They never blinked an eye. $151.00 with the 15% tax here in New Brunswick. Made in Germany all over the blister pack.Had to pull the heads to clean the old ones out. Not doing that again.
Thanks for the info yall. Is there any way to get out a bad GP without busting it up? I suppose you have to put in new head gaskets too like any other head? I replaced a bad GP with a new Autolite a few months ago, am I already up **** creek?
I am assuming you mean getting a broken tip out? If it has run through already, it is probably gone already. You probably have some marks on a piston now. Otherwise, it may be time to pull the head.
If the GP is stuck in the head, make sure you use a 10mm socket and maybe a LITTLE heat and try to break it loose. (Caution when using too much heat, may damage the head) I had one GP stuck in my head and had to drill it out, what a pain. My head was off, so it mas not that bad. There is a ledge down in the hole where the GP seats, so if you do need to drill, be very careful not to hit the ledge. Having a machine shop do it would be ideal. I damaged to threads on mine, but it is still holding.
i just changed out 4 of mine(the non-working ones) 2 champs 2 autolites. 1 auto was distorted but intact, the other was missing tip,it had long ago fallen off!yikes!thank god it must have passed thru, everything still running fine.Amazing difference in cold start, gee go figure!50%bad plugs!lol! I will be replacing the rest of the plugs(champs) as son as i can.I am using the ac's.
Just last winter, I had a hard time starting my rig. Come to found out that all the plugs were burnt out by the controller. The controller was bad, thankfully, the plugs were Beru's. Because all the plugs were intact without a broken tip
Had to change the oil seal at my crank in the boat.. There is 20 cm clearence between the engine and the wall..
Could not get the new one in , but then i came up with an idea..
I used a hot air gun to heat up the place the seal was going and then i used ice spray like the athletics use when injured . The seal was white of ice and i tryed to get it in the hole.. Easy. Poped right in there..
I'm thinking to do the same with the GP. If tip is not broken of start the engine and heat it up.. Then use the ice spray on the GP only.. Then this will shrink and its easier to get it out..
When I dropped the used engine into my truck I checked all the GPs 7 of them were Beru the 8th one was a Bosch I think anyhow bought one Beru stuck it in. Well almost 2 years knock on wood I haven't touched the GPs I don't know how old the other GPs are they all work. Sure the Beru are tad expensive but you figure they will last 2 plus years its worth it. I won't use anything else its not worth it the IDIs need GPs to start when they are cold.
