air pump question

My 1980 f150 has the original 6 cylinder, and I was wondering about the air pump, should I disconnect it? or leave it alone, will it effect the egr? and if I disconnect it how should I go about it? thanks Randy

Unless it's frozen, don't even bother. You'll get maybe 1/2 horsepower by disconnecting it. It won't affect the EGR, it supplies fresh air to the cat so it can burn pollutants.

Yeah i would leave it alone till it gives you problems, then i would just disconnect the airlines going to the cat and the filter for the incoming air, but if you can get away with it i would remove the entire assembly and just replace the belt with a shorter one.

I noticed a big rubber hose coming from the air pump, that goes to the EGR assembly under the carburator, how would you ever plug that off? actually it seems to be working fine, the reason I ask is I think I have a slight exhaust leak sound coming from the engine compartment, have'nt pin pointed it yet but was suspecting that air pump business

That exhaust leak could be a loose exhaust bolt or something, but if its a his like souond or something similar then just check all the hoses and such for any cracks or rotted spots, mostly likely it'll be around the fitting where the hoses plug into their necessary connections. But if it is working fine i would just leave it alone.

when i rebuilt my 300 i took the air pump off and cut that big hose about two inches from the base of the carb , put a bolt in it and a hose clamp. i have had no problems with it. if you do this you also have to plug off the vacume lines that go to it
