Since I bought this SUV, when I accelerate then let off the throttle, the engine makes a very loud thump and the entire vehicle shudders. It happens approx half the time. If I accelarate more slowly, then the engine doesn't do this.
Other times, when I'm accelerating, the vehicle doesn't seem to shift when it should. Example: yesterday, while accelerating through 25-35MPH, the tach went past 3500 RPMs and the engine sounded like it wanted to shift, but took longer than one would expect.
Took to dealer twice, and go the typical "that's a normal characteristic of the vehicle." Somehow I doubt it.
I'm thinking of buying out my lease when it's up, but I'm reluctant right now. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help.
I've got an '04 XLT with the V8 and it doesn't do this - 'course, mine's 4X2 so it might not be a fair comparison. If you buy it after the lease/warranty is up and the tranny/AWD goes out, you're looking at major $$$. See if the dealer has an '04 V8 AWD Mountie demo you can drive, to check out how "normal" this is.
You're probably right -- last thing I need is another expensive headache. I've owned six Explorers/Mountaineers over the years, and I've never had a dealer seem interested in doing anything other than repeating the company line about what is or is not a "normal characteristic of the vehicle." I hope others' experiences have been better.
