I was trying to replace my fuel filter yesterday on my '95 xlt supercab, when I ran into quite a mess. While trying to get the fuel line off of the top end of the filter(you know, where the spring is) using the little tool and everything, it would just not come off! I strapped the old one back on because I had to go, but I've never the trouble with a fuel filter like the one on this truck.
I'm taking it to a mechanic friend of mine tomorrow, but it just frustrates the crud out of me that I couldn't do it myself. Any answers?
Well the "scissor type" disconnect tool I bought from Advance Auto for my 99 Ranger fuel filter wouldn't work, as the release flanges weren't large enough circumference wise nor long enough by a fraction of an inch, to completely release the banjo spring, so I exchanged it for a plastic release tool & it came right off, first time no problem.
The plastic tool is a Dorman 800-009 "Quick Disconnect" 1/4", 5/16", 3/8"
Hope this helps. Let us know what you used & how it does.
It's a pain, isn't it. Every time I change mine I cuss for about 15 minutes while I'm pushing and pulling with the tool, and it eventually just slips right off nice and smooth. Irritating though
it is really annoying, I changed it about a month ago on my 98 ranger. I got the metal scissor type to work. I bought it from Autozone for $5. there is like 3 different types, I had first bought the plastic set that kinda snaps on but it wouldn't work, so I had to return it. the fuel cut off is located behind the passenger side kick-panel (little black square thing with red button) It was recommended to me, to remove it first, and then start the truck for a few seconds to relieve the gas pressure, before changing the fuel filter. My fuel filter had two little metal clips I had to remove then I had to fight with it a while using the tool, but it finally came off.
Well, I put the old one back on for now because I ran out of time. Like you mentioned, I bought the $5 one at Autozone, but no dice. Yeah, and the fuel cut-off you mentioned should help, lest I sit by and watch my precious Chevron pour out on the driveway again. We'll give it a shot in the morning and see what happens.
Better late than never, but do you guys recommend any particular fuel filter? It had a replacement Motocraft on it and I bought a Wix to replace that one. Anything better I should get instead?
Well I don't rightly know about other filters, as I've always used MotorCraft replacement filters on the Zypher, Taurus & Ranger, but I don't see why Wix shouldn't be ok if it fits & has at least the same filter area & particle size filtration.
Who knows, maybe Wix makes some of the MotorCraft replacement fuel filters, as I doubt Ford is in the filter making bsiness.
They probably sublet their specifications to the lowest bidder just like most other mfgs that need a special item they don't make at home.
Nothing wrong with that as long as the item meets the spec.
