I am think about putting a Ranch hand front end bumper replacement on my 78 along with a winch.
I have read that my stock alt will not be nerly enough -which I believe is a 60 amp.Would the HO 100amp alternater work?? I think It would also be best to have dual batteries??
I have read you want a which rated ATLEAST 1.5 times the truck wieght right?? my truck will be about 6000lbs when i'm done so I was thinking a 9000lb Warn. I saw one on e-bay for $300 almost new.
Teach me oh whincher ones .. let you knowledge flow

As you all know I will be moding/upgrading my truck extensively
the ranch hand bumper is a great idea, dual batteries is a must, and upgrade to the biggest ones you can shove into someplace on your truck better yet put in dual deep cycle batteries on a seperate electrical system with a second Alt, and use those for the winch, and any aux lighting that is about the best setup I have seen working.
An alternative... the one I use... Mile Marker hyd winch which runs off of the power steering pump... No extra batteries, large alternator, etc... The only drawback which people always bring up is the fact that does not work without the engine running... electric units don't either for very long...
Anyway, check it out... It will fit in any Warn bumper (Mine fits)
I'd invest in an Optima yellow top for your second battery. Use an isolator and it won't kill your primary battery if you winch with the engine off. I also like the idea of the hydro winch which I'll eventually get.
Winches draw a large amp load so you need to have plenty of storage. Upgrading the alternator is a good idea and will be really helpful but won't do too much good if you don't have the heavy duty battery to begin with.
I have been winching with my 12k warn so far this summer with only 1 redtop 800CCA battery. I have bought two 900+ CCA yellows to add for winching purposes only. I am running a G3 alternator which puts out 130 amps.
