Question Cold start surging

I have a 2004 F350 with the 6.0 turbo. When I drive the truck with a cold motor, at low speeds it surges. Once it warms up, no problem. I live in Florida so 'cold' is not really that cold.

There was a flash for your PCM that I think fixes that. Have you ever had it to the dealer for a flash or recalibration?

No, I've only had the truck for a few weeks and I spend a lot of time traveling for business.

By the way, what is 'flashing' the PCM? I've seen other references to reflashing and it seems it results in more noise, less power and smoke.

"The Flash Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (FEEPROM) is an Integrated Circuit (IC) within the PCM. This integrated circuit contains the software code required by the PCM to control the powertrain. One feature of the FEEPROM is that it can be electrically erased and then reprogrammed without removing the PCM from the vehicle. If a software change is required to the PCM, the module no longer needs to be replaced, but can be reprogrammed at the dealership. The reprogramming is done through the DLC. "

New flashes are released to correct problems with the powertrain performance. The noise issue was increased when pilot injection that only worked at idle was removed. It only increased noise at an idle.

Here are the preliminary steps for diagnosing "surge" and a host of other issues:

Perform the following preliminary checks:

Confirm brakes are not dragging.
Check for oil in coolant.
Check engine oil level.
Confirm oil change within 12,070 km (7,500 miles).
Check air intake system: Air Filter Minder.
Check MAP sensor hose for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
Check EBP sensor tube for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
Check intake manifold system for leaks.
Confirm acceptable SAE oil viscosity and API rating of oil.
Check for sufficient clean fuel.
Check for air in fuel.
Check for intake restriction.
Compare loaded weight of vehicle with performance expectations.
Power monitor active.
Transmission concerns.
