Engine cooling new fan

just wanted to share.

I have instaled the new 2,700 CFM Electric Fan from Flex-O-Lite. man what a nice set up! I did not just stick it to the radiator and let it go. I made a cardboard pattern and went to the local metal shop and hade a new custom fan shroud made. Cost: 30.00 dollars. this way the fan is pulling air thru the whole radiator surface. I also installed the new Fan control unit. that realy helps with the heat soak problem on the FE engines. it will let the fan runn up to 30 seconds after the key is shut off, just like the new trucks. it works so good and boy is it quite. all you hear now is that big engine screaming now. now mecanical fan noise. I also like the fact I don't have the finger git-er under the hood. If any one wants I can send a pic of my set up. I finaly got in to the 21st century and bought a new digital camera. now I just got to learn how to use the thing.

I wasant aware that FE's had a heat soak problem. I opted for a alumium six blader from flex-a-lite because the unrelaiblity of the eletric fans. My 19incher pulls so much air its unbleivabable I have no cooliong issues, the only problem is that its so loud. Now that I think of it, what would the advantage of the fan running after shut down be? The water pump isnt ciruculaing coolant when its off so running the fan while its off would be pointless wouldnt it? The coolant temp inside the engine wouldt change. Maybe Im just backwards in my thinking I dunno.

the Fes are known for heat soak. that is why they have a spacer plate in between the intake and carb. as a matter of fact, the factory plate on mine had cooling lines going throu it. I replaced it with a edelbrock phonalic unit over three years ago. if you do not have a heat soak issue and no plate between the carb and intake, you are lucky. as for the electric fan. well that is just what you like. I had over heat issues in stop and go trafick in town. it would take some time, but it would happen. with the elictric unit. my temp stays steady as a rock. and I realy like the sound of those pipes with no background fan noise. I will add that I have had to get used to gauging how fast I am going with out looking at the speedo. due to the engine soud change. on the fan running after shut down. what Ford puts out is, that by cooling down the water in the radiator after engine shut down. is that heat is drawn to coold. under that theroy the coolant temp in the rad is drawn down and then the hot water will disapate heat throu the rad hose to the cooler water. Convection theroy. basicaly you are giving the heat in the engine some where to go by cooling the rad water. hey all I know is. it works. this helps with hot engine start up and some other problems I have had in the past. now don't get me wrong. the old fan worked, I am just saying in my case. the elictric fan is working a lot better over all in all kinds of situations. I live in the steamy south. so in the summer time. anything you can do to control engine temp is a good thing. as far as the reliabilaty of the new fan. time will tell. one last thing. the controler I opted for. also has a by pass switch for the fan on and off. you mount control switchs in your cab and you can over ride the automatic control. this is for severe over heat and water crossings for our four wheeling freinds out there.

You don't have to have the water pump running to circulate coolant. Many smaller tractors from the 30's-40's didn't even have a water pump, only a radiator fan. The hot water in the engine rises, while the cool water in the radiator descends, and you have coolant flow, though obviously not as fast as with a water pump. This won't work with a crossflow radiator.

Hello to all. I will get the pic posted tomorow. my daughter has promised to show me how. stop laughing! I can rebuild Ford engines in my sleep but can't get the camera to work right. I'll GIT-R-DONE soon. as to where to get the parts. way easy. Summit Racing. here are the part numbers. FLX-398 (fan) 119,95, FLX 31165 ( speed control ) 78.95, wow I was just looking at the bill and see the shiping was free on this one. don't know why. any way the fans are realy popular at the moment so it most likely be a back order. it took a week to get mine. one other good thing I forgot about the controler. when it first kicks on, it starts out at 60% load then if needed goe's to 100%. Flex-o-lite said this is to help with the jolt to the ALT. the fan pulls 17 AMPs at max load. that seems to about standard for most high CFM fans. I will try to get the pics out to you guys ASAP.

I just noticed you live in NC! I also live there and I replaced the fan becasue it gets so hot. The fan you have, is it a single fan or dual fans?

it is the new single "S" blade fan. I saw it in Clasic Trucks MAg two months ago. I hope to have the pic posted later to day. I looked at the dual fans. but just did not want to go there. plus finding one to fit my RAD was not easy. the old ford RADs are vertical flow. all the new dual fan units are for the cross flow RADs.

I hope it keeps you cool. I ran a sinlge flex-a-lite for a while. It would not keep up with my stroked 428, A/C and the Texas heat. I upgraded to the dual flex-a-lite beast. It can keep cool, so long as my electric system can keep up. It has blown a 30 AMP fuse. Now running a new fuse holder assembly designed for high end car audio and a 40 AMP fuse.

I think you did good by making a full coverage shroud. I think that's where my smaller flex-a-lite failed. It had it's own shroud, but it didn't cover most of the radiator. th new beast covers most of the radiator, and pulls a lot of air when the 2 fans are spinning. It to has the 60-100% controller you are running.
