I bought an 89 F250 4x4 with a 460 and a C6. The truck is in very good condition but I ran into a problem with it.
I was driving the truck and all of a sudden it felt like the tranny went bad. The engine was still running and would rev but it would not move in any gear (all u-joints were verified good). My immediate thought was the tranny was junk. So, I get it towed to my house and now it will not start. The starter spins and it even seems like it is spinning something but it doesn't turn the engine over (not seized as you can turn it by hand). Could the flywheel have broken or something? Has anyone ever heard or seen something like this?
Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

BTW, for those that care the seller of the truck gave me back a lot of my money now that the truck needs to be repaired so I got a steal of a deal.
It sounds like the flywheel is missing a few teeth. If you crank the motor over by hand, you can get by the bad spot, but it's only going to happen again unless you replace the ring gear.
But that's not the problem that made you think the tranny was dead. See what it does when you get it started.
I have seen the flex plate (flywheel) break around the the hub where it bolts to the engine. Either way the trans will have to come out. I just hope that that is the the problem I have also seen cranks break but not on a 460. Take the starter out and mark the flywheel with chalk or paint and then turn the motor by hand and see if the mark moves. or mark the harmonic balancer and then hit the starter and see if that mark moves. My thoughs are the flex plate is broke.
I think that I have confirmed that it is a broken flexplate. I took the inspection plate of and had my dad crank it over. Sure enough it spins there but the rest of the engine does not. Time to take the tranny out!!!
