when i start my 79 f-150 it will fire but then it will not keep running. Only time it will stay running is when it fires then turn the key half a cenitmeter to the left and back to the right and it will keep running. i have put in a new ignition switch and it kept doing this i dont know whats wrong. anybody else have an idea whats wrong?
o yeah sometimes it will start without having to wiggle the key but when it starts the fan for the heater and A/C has no power to it. and i have to wiggle the key while its running to get those to turn on.
Did you replace the electrical part of the switch or the mechanical locking part of the switch? Look over the wiring connector for the back of the switch, a bad switch can melt the connector and cause lots of trouble.
If you replaced the lock cylinder you won't affect the electrical part of the ignition switch. The part that the lock cylinder goes into, that is mounted behind the dash with the wires attached, is what needs to be checked over for fault. If that is what you did, I appologize for mis-reading your post.
sorry. yes I was asking when ford moved the key to the steering collemn as opposed to the dash like my '73 has.
wasn't trying to cause any confusion. when you made the comment about using the wire to remove the key mech. I thought that maybe the last couple of years of this bodystyle
might have had a locking steering col.
hope that clears up my mess.
