1996 Ranger Question

All, my dad has a 96 ranger, 3.0 Liter, 4X4, auto. Thing has about 120,000 miles on it and for a while, the check engine light has been constantly on. If memory serves right, doesn't this indicate something may be up with the emissions system? Possibly O2 sensor or something to that effect? Any advise is appreciated.

The CEL indicates the computer has detected a fault, have the codes pulled, some part stores will do it for free. Post the code(s) and we'll point you in the right direction.
