I have a 97 5.4 expy with Idle problems. I changed the rear passenger o2, then the fuel filter. no better. Now from reading on this site I have discovered that the pcv hose is pretty much destroyed where it plugs into the intake or the throttle body. anyway I had a rough time with the o2 and the fuel filter, not sure if they should have been as hard or if I am just retarded. So to save hopefully another nightmare can somone tell me how to remove this hose the right way because there seems to be a trick to everything on this beast all the way down to finding the oil filter and autozone telling me I had a massive sytem leak which ended up my gas cap was not put on right. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
This one really is easy! I just had the same idle problem with my 98. The famous "rubber elbow" from the PCV system had rotted away. It is located all the way in the back of the engine. You have to climb on top and lean all the way to the back. Obviously, you must do this while the engine is cool or you will burn yourself. I never could see it. I just found it by feeling around. It will be obvious when you find it. It just slides off. There are no clamps. After all these years it may be stuck. I used a small screw driver to help pry it off. Unfortunately, Ford does not sell just the elbow. You must buy the entire hose set, including the PCV valve. Replacing the entire set is a pain since it is buried amongest all the other hoses and wires in the engine. However, I just replaced the elbow from the new part and the PCV valve. I left everything else alone. The new one just slides right on. Once you find it, it only takes about 10 minutes. BTW, Ford sells two different parts for this system. One is about $29 and the other is about $49. Mine needed the $49 part to replace the entire system. The elbows and PCV valves are identical in both parts so if you are only going to replace only those two parts, I would recommend that you buy the cheaper part and use the new elbow.
