Squirrels

Anybody have any suggestions on how to keep squirrels from nesting and storing walnuts on the engine of my truck? I only drive it once or twice a week and everytime I get in it, there are walnuts all over the engine and nesting material here and there.

Smart squirrels--they like Fords! I suggest placing a few mothballs strategically around the engine compartment, where they won't fall out when driving; alternately, sprinkle the engine compartment with a bit of garlic--they don't like the smell of mothballs or garlic (not sure what your mechanic will think of either....)
Good luck!
Frank.

well, I'm not sure how effective it would be, but it would still be really funny if you put a bunch of mousetraps all over the place, in the engine, and scattered on the ground, so if he snaps one on the engine, he's sure to fall on another one on the ground. hehehe... garlic sounds safer, although, when it warms up, you smell like you're cookin something italian.

All sound like good suggestions but have drawbacks.
Mousetraps may be messy and might not work unless you're going to use lots.
Mothballs and garlic may work good but have the drawback of smelling up your truck. Easy to make wire cages to hang either in to hold in your engine compartment.

Probably the best would be giving him better nesting conditions elsewhere. Try the garlic and mothballs but put up a nice warm, high enough from predators and safe from elements box. Hopefully it will go for that.

Or if your truck has a gun rack in the back window shoot the little sucker, then have him stuffed and mounted ala Jaguar style on your hood as warning to other nut gatherers. :P (last section was sarcasm by the way)

All sound like good suggestions to me, however I agree on staying away from the garlic and mothballs. Something about small mammals... the don't like human hair ( sounds funny I know, but it's the truth )
If none of the above work, you can always roll up some ducktape and put it in random places around your truck, with about 100 mousetraps stuck in random places under your truck, along with your neighbor kid hiding in a tree with a pellet gun waiting patiently to shoot the little sucker. After you kill one of em, you can stuff it and hang em from the front bumper... kinda like something a pirate would do, you know? I'd betcha they wouldn't come back

Thanks for the suggestions. Let's see, I've tried mothballs, dryer sheets and cut up pieces of irish spring soap. These had no effect whatsoever. The squirrel or squirrels just piled walnuts and nesting material right on top of it. I'll try the garlic and maybe the duct tape and let you know what happens.

Purchase a live animal trap. (Metal wire grill cage with a platform that once they step on to get the bait will close a door behind them).

Pet stores and farm animal feed stores sell them. About $20.00 for the small size.

Bait it with peanut butter and I guarantee you'll catch one a day.

Release them in an area where they can find a new home.

mmm... stew...

Okay, I'm gonna make a hybrid of my idea, and another guy's. I'd get that live animal trap, right? Line it with mouse traps, you know.. just in case...
Then, with that, when you catch him, make a stew! Mmm... stew...

Well, the garlic also had no effect even though it smelled really strong. I guess the little red squirrel is bound and determined to make my truck his home for the winter. I guess I'll have to just start driving the truck for a few days and maybe he'll move on.
