New To The Game

Hey Guys ,
First Off I Would Like To Thank The Ones Who Helped Me With My Last Problem . Next , I Need All Your Help Again .
I Have My First Project Ive Been Workinf On And I Have No Idea What Im Doing . But That Is A Small Problem . I Cant Find The Right Info Anywhere So Any Help Would Be Great .

My Problem Is That I Run A 6 Volt System And Was Told To Run A 8 Volt Battery , They Said It Would Be Better . So I Did (this Recommendation Had Come From A Very Trusted Friend) And I Have Just Read An Article On This Swap . It Seems That I Need To Do A Lot Of Work In Order To Run This Larger Volt Battery , And It Might Still Be A Wrong Idea . There Does Not Seem To Be A Charger Made For The 8 Volt (i May Be Wrong) And Had Read That The Generator Is Lacking The Power To Keep The Battery Charged (im Leaving From Virginia To Florida On A Long Road Trip) . Does Any One Know If I Can Rebuild The Generator To Handle The 8 Volt (i Think Im Wrong In Asking) Or Am I S.o.l With The Choice I Made .

Any Suggestions Out There Are Needed For Problem . Im Not Ready To Change Ot My System For A 12 Volt . Like I Said , This Is My First Project And Im Learning As I Go . I Am Running Out Of Time To Finish This And Am Pulling What Little Hair I Have Left Out .

Thanks For Your Time .

What are you running 6 volts in? I would convert to 12 volts and be done with it. I for sure would not put in an 8 volt battery. Make your trip with the 6 and then do an upgrade.

Your generator can handle the 8 volt battery. This is a common thing people used to do to make the lights brighter, and the truck start better.

What you need to do is have the regulator recalibrated for the 8 volt battery. The regulator is the seperate box that controls the generator. It "regulates" the generator output. I have never monkeyed with a regulator before, but the old ones where mainly mechanical inside, and the voltage adjustment is probably mechanical in nature.

You need to find a shop in your area that works on auto electrics. They are getting few and far between nowadays because everybody just goes to the chain stores and gets a new alt, but there is usually one still in business in a decent size town, that rebuilds alt's and gen's for cars and especially large trucks that have very expensive alt's. They should be able to re-calibrate the regulator for you, so the generator puts out more voltage. You want it something over 8 volts so it will charge the battery.

After they do this for you, keep an eye on the water level in the battery. If you start losing a lot of water, then they have the voltage set too high.
