I just got my truck primered with dupont 491-16 epoxy primer and it turned out really good. I was wondering how this would stand up as a top coat instead of painting it how long would it last before rusting out??
Epoxy primer is very durable and waterproof. I'd say it would last a long time as a topcoat, although I don't know for certain. It would probably wear away before it would rust from underneath.
Although every time you parked it, people would ask "When are you going to paint it?", and that would get old......
It's pretty hard and seals well..... I don't know how long it would last. I primed my Mustang in PPG DP expoxy primer and then had to move it out of my garage for other work. It sat outside for a month and a 1/2. When I pulled it back in the grage to finish painting it it was really now orse for the wear other than it needed to be clean for painting.
I saw an old '40 ford coupe hot rod that had been painted with PPG flat black 2-part epoxy primer and then clear coated with a hint of green candy in the clear. It was definitely shiny and in direct sunlight, there was a weird green tint to the reflections. At night, in the more yellow light of head lamps and street lights, the owner told me it really reflected the green. He did the paint himself and after the 3rd coat of clear he claimed to have the hang of it.
He said he choose that odd combination out of frustration with the overall costs of the paint. The primer was $130 and the tinted clear was another $90, both of these he would need anyway. If he slipped in a base coat, black of course, he would have shelled out another $150.

After having let the epoxy primered car sit for 1 1/2 months, did you have to shoot more epoxy on it beofre final primer or paint?

I did but not because it needed it... a simple washing and wetsand with 600 would have it prepped enough for paint. I did some more bodywork in some areas I ignored before so I had enough extra primer to give the whole car another quick one-coat job. It was not need though.
