2.3 horrid idle

I have an 87 ranger 2.3 efi. Ive replaced the idle air bypass valve and still get a high idle that wont go down unless i shut the engine off and restart. Sometimes that even wont work. I start it on cold mornings, it idles at like 1300 for about 10 sec, then jumps up to 2000-2400 and stays there till it really warms up. Sometimes it randomly will jump to 2000 when warm, and then back down to 700. Once truck is warm, it usually sticks to 700, and stays smooth, but sometimes it acts up bad. The truck is all original eng+5spd with 207,000 mi!!!!!!!!!
Any tips on what this could be? I would think some sensor is acting up, but dont really know.

I would try pulling the codes, scanners are inexpensive for your year and they may give you a place to start. The coolant (ECT) sensor could be the cause if everything with the IAC is good, but I always hate to start replacing sensor without knowing they are bad thats why I like to look at the codes.

This may sound a little cliche & over-simplistic, but, have you checked your TPS (throttle position sensor)??? They have a habit of acting wierd. I'm not suggesting replacing it yet, but clean it up real good, & clean all the connections running to & fro. If that don't change anything, then you're probably right about sensors failing.

Thanks! My local auto parts stores pulled my codes for free, and told me i had a bad TPS! 18.95 and im back on the road idling right!!
