Scott, I don't think it is the strength of the block. Sorry for your trouble, though. Is there any chance you had some type of oil failure problem? There are concerns about using too high viscosity oils in these engines. If you were using oil that did not have the bottom number at 5 or lower, this could be one reason for the bottom end to starve. There is info posted by me on another thread about this issue. Ford is absolutely right in recommending 5W-20 or 5W-30 oils.

I also assume you change your oil at 3000 mile intervals or less. There have been oil pump failures and that could be the problem.

There can always be a structural defect in the connecting rod - this is rare, but can happen.

It would really take a tear down inspection to figure what actually happened. As bad as this is for you personally, I would not let this isolated event stand in the way of buying a vehicle with the modular V8 or in having that one repaired.

While I don't think Ford has done what it should in fully developing the power potential of the modular engine for its truck applications, it is and has been a very stout engine. With respect, I continue to hold the view that the block is, as I said, "damn stout."
