Question on pinging engines

My 1995 F-Series Owner's Guide says, "Do not be concerned if your vehicle sometimes knocks lightly when you drive up a hill or when you accelerate."

I think many other vehicle owner's guides say the same thing. Why?

I have had a couple of good mechanics tell me that an engine should NOT ping at all.

Also, what about so called "performance" tune of advancing the timing and running a higher octane fuel. No good?

Thanks, Paul

I know that my service manuel says that very same thing.....So I'm curious as well.

I've read so many reports saying that higher octanes are just a waste of money, but if this is true, then why does the higher octane stop the pinging?

why does the higher octane stop the pinging?
because it burns slower - pinging is when the fuel mixture ignites before the piston is at TDC.

It is usually caused by carbon buildup in the combustion chambers causing hot spots that fire the mixture before the plugs do, a non functioning EGR system, a lean fuel mixture, ofr the timing too far advanced. Pinging is hard on pistons and such because it is the result of a violent occurance of two flame fronts crashing together in the cylinders. This is why most newer vehicles have knock sensors to automatically retard the timing to keep the engine from being damaged.
