You can get some replacement plastic ones from your local auto part's store. I have used these before when I did not have the OEM clips and they have worked fine for me. They hold the panels tight with out rattles and are a bit easier to remove if you need to!! They come in packages of 6, I think. -Ed
I agree with Mike - my 79 f250's door panels use a plastic plug with coarse ribs and a flexible pressure plate at the top. Yes, they do hold the door well without rattling, but they are designed for single use. To remove them you have to simply pull, which usually damages the ribs so badly they're unuseable again. If you're doing work inside the door, you either have to leave your door covers off for the whole time - which might be days or weeks - or spend a fortune replacing the plugs over and over again.
I've been tempted to drill through the panels, put a threaded insert into the holes in the door, and use some kind of decorative bolt or a bolt-head cap. I've seen nice chrome screw head caps at the parts store...
If you have black door panels, you can just drill straight through and use a christmas tree plug to hold the door panel on. They are available at any auto parts store.
My truck has the metal clips and they are hard to remove without breaking the plastic mounts on the panel itself. I'm going to try to rig something with heavy duty Velcro.
