90 F-250 351w. I just had it in the shop today and they believe the cat is clogged, causing too much pressure to collect in the exhaust system, blowing out pieces of the manifold gaskets (has had exhaust leak since I bought the truck in May) and causing the truck to idle too high (the problem it went to the shop for).
Now, my thought process on how to fix the problem: I'm thinking about (since it's emissions exempt in my area due to the 8600# GVWR) getting rid of the cat and just putting a dual straight pipe w/ glasspack system on it. I was thinking about 2.5" pipes. Would that still give me enough backpressure to be healthy, yet be free-flowing enough to improve numbers?? I'm going to get estimates tomorrow on my way to work, but I would like to get as close an estimate as possible (so I know how much to start saving out of my paychecks......)
ok, I talked to the exhaust shop yesterday and he said that it wouldn't even pass the state safety inspection without a cat, so I'm gonaa have to get a new one. On the plus side, he said he does those all the time and it would be about $175 (installed) for the cat, and about $250 for the cat and Y-pipe to dual glasspack mufflers with 2.5"..... So I think I'll go that route.
