302-351w differences.

I was wondering, what are all the differences, between a 302 and a 351w. I was just trying too remember, cause I am looking at an 83 f-150, and I'm not sure if it's one or the other. I was wondering if anybody could tell me the width of the intake and the which one has the water neck pointing tarward the top or forward?

Thanks.

Easy way to tell on older engines is firing order,the 351w uses 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8.

Another easy way to tell, feel the block behind the intake, there will be two very noticable ridges if its a 351w, there will be nothing if its a 302.

From the base of the valve covers, measured across the intake, you will get 11" on a 351w and a lot less on the 302.

Thanks for the info, I believe this engine is a 351w, the intake measures 11" from edge too edge, inside edge of the valve covers.

351W/302 gooseneck takes a right angle to the intake. The 351/400M goes straight down.
351W & both M's have the same firing order.

351W has a higher deck height. The PS mount hole for the 302 is almost level with the top of the block/head interface, it is a good 1" + lower on the 351W.

it is 11" from bolt to bolt on the intake for the windsor and 9 something for the 302 (9.5?). The 351W has a ridge right behind the dizzy around the dizzy hole. you can remove the gooseneck from a 351w with a socket&rachet.

Yes. you have to change the firing order if you are using a Non-HO 302 cam. If you have a roller cam, no, it won't work (without a lot of trouble.

I guess I should have been more specific. I want to put a 5.0 HO roller cam into my 95 5.8 F150. I'm pretty sure the F150 5.8 has a flat tappet cam. I know I will need new pushrods, the roller lifters and dogbones as well as the spider that goes in the middle. My main concern is if the holes where the bearings go and the round parts of the cam (the name escapes me right now) are the same size. is there any other problems I would run into

a normal 5.0HO cam won't work in a non-roller block. you need a reduced base-circle cam.

Really???? I could have sworn I read some where the F150 5.8 was a flat tappet. I wondered why ford would use a flat tappet cam on a 5.8 when they had been using rollers on 5.0s since 85-86. I guess I will have to do some more research.

93 1/2 + the 5.8 351w used a block with F4TE as part of the casting number, this was a roller compatible block...however, other than the 97 HD trucks, they all had flat tappet cams from the factory. Why ford did that is beyond me...IMO its about as stupid as not mass producing the 351w on the level they did the 302.

So my cam is flat tappet, but I can put a roller cam in there easily?? Is that what you are saying? And if so will a 5.0 HO cam fit?
