Looking at new tires pretty soon and came across the General All Terrain and General Grabber All Terrain tire, does anybody have any good input on these tires? I heard they are comparable to Bfgoodrich AT KOs, But cheaper. Rich
On my 97 f150 (purchased new) i got barely 42,000 miles. Same truck, same driver, same load, same maintenance and i got 82,000 on the replacement goodyear wranglers. ("same maintenance" means 6,000 mile tire rotations and twice a month air pressure checks.) And when i changed the tires, the 82,000 wranglers had way better tread left than was on the factory 42,000 mile generals.
everyone knows the factory tires on a new garden variety vehicle (that is, not a lariat, not a Vette, etc) are pretty crummy, but i've had similiar bad tire wear experiences with general tires that were put on used vehicles. I wont ever buy another general tire.
My f150 came with General Grabbers, fronts were bad at 40 K and the side wall exploded out of a back tire on the interstate going 70 mph and allmost killed me at 45k. I went to Tire Discounters and got a some noname LT tire next to cheapest at like 89 dollars a peice and they have been great tires I am at 125k miles and still have good tread.
Only tire I'll run on my vehicles is the BFG-AT ko. Great in the bush, awsome in the rain (and we get LOTS of rain in S.W. British Columbia) and good in the snow. I rarely have to chain up when heading to work at our local ski hill which is at the end of a long, curvy mountain road.
also note that ford is putting some new 04 f150's on the lot with a tire called "hancock". Call me cynical but these must be the bargain basement tires of the new world.
Until proven otherwise i consider the hancock tires to be worse than a general.
Thanks guys, I guess you get what you pay for. The General is out. I am going to go with the Goodyear Wrangler's AT/s. I need something that will last longer 33" tires are not cheap!!
A lot of the Goodyears have more road noise than I like. I had a set of Wranglers once and wasn't impressed considering what I paid. Just bought a 2002 F150 wearing Goodyear Eagle II's and they are noisy as all git-out over 60mph. Years ago I had excellent service with the Michelin XCH4's but they are no longer made. I'll be looking for a Michelin the next time I need tires.
Oh, I'm referring to regular LT tires, not 4WD tires. Never owned a 4WD.
I have had both Hankook and General and wasn't impressed with either the Generals blew the side wall out and the tread didn't last at all. As for the Hankooks I WOULD NOT EVEN USE THEM AS A TIRE SWING FOR MY KID I don't know how the people at Hankook sleep at night my hankooks had about 20,000 miles on them and they looked like I drove over 100 miles of glass the tread was shredded. I run Dunlop Mud Rovers now but I wish I could have afforded the BFGs but they are good tires so far.
Um, they Suck...... I would not let my worst enemy buy them.
General separated on the wife’s Expy and caused $1,800 worth of damage without warning and only 23,000 miles on it. I REFUSE to give them any business due to the fact that the tires are so poor. I have Goodyear Fortera and love them. Put them on at 30,000 and now the truck has 60,000 miles and probably another 25,000 – 30,000 miles left.
I had a set of general tires on my 89 Camaro. They lasted for about 20,000 miles and were wore completely out. The tread looked like dough. There was nothing there but what looked like melted rubber. And I never did a burnout in the car because it was the 2.8 V6.
karenj.........Wow! I see people, with alot of tire problems out there. Let's see.......The set of Generals that came "new" on my 01' F150 lasted 55,000 miles. No Problems whatsoever!!!
I have also had two other sets of Generals last 80,000 plus miles on my 99 Mercury Sable.
Why? I do ROTATE & BALANCE them every 6,000-7,000 miles religiously. Each time, I can tell the difference in how much better they ride.
The majority of those miles are highway miles. It's 75 miles one way to work here in East Texas to Dallas every morning.
Whatever you buy, at least keep the proper air pressure in them plus rotate and balance regularly!!!! They should last longer than their advertised mileage.

I would have to humbly disagree with you. Check these boards and you will see how many people have had trouble with them and these are people that care about their cars. I even checked on the NHTSA and this link states it all.
I rotated the Generals on the wife’s Expy every 5,000 miles and checked the air in them once a month. There was more then ½ the tread life left when the tire separated and the guys at the tire shop said that they are poor quality of tires. I am the type of person that changes things before they need it and do not like to be broken down.
On my truck they lasted till 35,000 miles and were OK. I replaced them because I was having a bad feeling.
i agree with Aztrainer. As mentioned in earlier post, i barely got 42,000 from my factory general tires. i easily got 82,000 miles from the replacement goodyear wranglers, and now i have plenty of tread left on the 3rd tire set of michelins with 51,000 miles on them. (truck has 175,000 on it) . From tread remaining i expect to get another 35,000 or more from the michelins. And i dont run the tires bald; i replace them before they are probably needed to stay on the safe side. These numbers are only from 2wd street use , all weather tires--no offroad.
I felt good about the 42,000 miles on the factory supplied generals as factory supplied tires are often crummy (excluding premium brands, sports cars, lariats, etc). What bothers me was the 2 sets of replacement generals i put on other vehicles (wife's car, etc). The durabilty of those tires was very bad and i maintained them at a high level (rotations at 6,000 and psi checks once a month or more). These 2 replacement sets barely got 30 to 35,000 miles.
I will not buy another general tire for long term use but i wouldnt have any problem buying them if i knew i would be trading fairly soon.
I had a set of general xp2000's on my 92 ranger and they seemed to be really good for the money. They were not off road tires though. I have 285/75/16 BFG AT ko's on my 1997 f-150 4x4 and I love them. I also have the same tire on my 94 ranger 4x4. Just make sure whatever you get you rotate them when your suppose to or they wont last. Good luck!!!!
