Cluster swap

Hey all,

My F-150 is one of the sad ones with no tach. Rather than getting a 15" tach and drillilng holes to mount that bad boy right in my line of sight, I was thinking of getting an f-150 instrument cluster with a tach. There's a guy on ebay who sells them for a fair price, and he'll program the mileage in for an extra $15.

My question is, does anyone know if the clusters are interchangable, and if my truck will support the tach-equipped cluster. I know I can add a tach and tap the lines, but will swapping it be a direct plug and play sort of deal?

Thanks in advance!

Seems to me someone had trouble doing a cluster swap because of the PATS system.

PATS? i am unfamiliar with that term....can anyone pls. clarify? I was doing another search on eBay and a 52mm autometer tach is close to a bill....that's a little too rich for my blood!

4.2manster,
I'm glad you asked that question. I was thinking of going down to the local Ford dealership and asking them if it would swap. I would really like to change the background on the guages. I don't really need a tach, but it would be nice. Didn't really want to drill holes to install a tach on the pillar post. But may come to it.

little red,

if you do a search on eBay for something like "f150 gauge pod" or something similar, you should get results for a few items that actually house the gauge pod on steering column, but it's a direct replacement (steering column 'cover'), not a "bolt-on" or "drill-on". It's pretty trick looking, but I think it'll block the odometer/tripmeter. Not that it's something you need to keep your eye on while driving, when you need to reference your miles just...move your head and look behind the tach.

The seller has them for manual and auto trans, because auto has the column shifter. Also, they are 52mm, and the only tach i saw on eBay that was 52mm was AutoMeter, for just under $100. Too much if you ask me.

Will be plug and play and even IF PATS is an issue, a stealership can take caer of that.

Just to be sure, get one from the same year if possible. Engine won't matter.

What are PATS? I'm not up to date with the new technology.

Thanks.

Is that why I have that little blinking red light that says THEFT in the guage cluster.

Send me a private message and I will give you an address to a guy that sells the clusters.

He will also program your mileage and set it up the cluster to recognize and record your PATS code.

Yes that is what the theft light is.. You key has a code that is stored in the instrument clusters (PATS).. If you swap gauges and try to start the truck it wont start because that new cluster doesnt have the PATS code off your key. Reason it costs a damn fortune to get a key from the dealership.

This fella will setup your new cluster to be in learn mode so all you do is swap the gauges, put the key in, start the truck and the cluster automatically retrieves and stores your key's PATS code into the cluster.

He sells it for about 150..

PS. I am alive still lol..
