Ford 9 Inch
Hey everyone, what's the difference between the 9" in a 81' F-100 and a 70' F-100? I know that the axle splines and bolt patterns are different, but what else, also i've also heard that the frame of the 81' is three inches wider, why I'm asking is because I'm using the front end of a 1989 lincoln for my 70 and i know that the lug pattern is the same with the 81 and the Lincoln.

the older 9's have butt welded axle tubes and 28 spline axles.the bolt pattern should be the same 5 on 5.5 with the execption of some later f-100's that had ranger bolt pattern.the later 9's have axle tubes that go inside the center portion of the housing and are much stronger,they also have 31 spline axles and larger axle bearings that are oil lubricated.the width is aprox 64 inches.
