i bought 3 different power steering pumps and they all wont work on my 78 F150 4wd .. i need to know what is happening.. why arent the pumps working..??
What doesn't work? Please be more specific. Does the pump not fit? The pulley won't go on, or does it not pump fluid. We need some more info to help you.
no the pump goes on fine and it works for like a day then the next day when i start it ,.. it is stiff as hell and wont work .. and i went through 3 pumps and they all did the same.. what else would be wrong..??
Sounds like you have a lot of air in the system. You need to bleed it. Raise the wheels off the ground, and support the truck by the frame. Turn the wheels from lock to lock, back and forth and it should work the air out. You might have to do this MANY times, but it will work. If it doesn't, you might need to make a vacuum pump to get the rest of the air out. Try the first method before anything.
Be sure to flush the system. There are lots of grit and filings in the hoses and box. And if these get into the new pump they will ruin it in a matter of hours... I like to install the new pump - but leave the return hose off and plug that spot on the pump. Then fill the pump and run the engine a couple seconds, stop and refill - no longer or you will run it dry and also ruin the pump. Keep doing this until the fluid coming out is as clean as the new fluid going in.
I have a 74 with a coversion from a 78 installed. It seems the pump is not getting enough pressure at low rpms so the steering stumples a bit , squeals like a pig and grunts a bunch at low speeds in tight spots.
Would a smaller pully fix this problem? Maybe?
