That's a good point, but it is sandwitched between the probe and the diaphram so I don't think it would move. Maybe I'll go back and glue it in with something. It would be hard to just put a blob of epoxy in there. I think if the vacuum can overcome the spring tension, the few ounces a nickle will add won't make a difference. I checked out my old egr valve, and I see the port isn't big enough for a nickle to fit through, so I don't have to worry about it getting sucked into the engine, that's always a good thing. Not to mention my truck has to be worth $.05 more than before, right?

Not Sure.

Just because we put $800 in tires on it don't mean the value went up $800

I got to hand it to you guys for your creativity.

Two more points I might mention.
1) I was told by one self-proclaimed "mechanic" that his dad went through several EGR valves from NAPA parts, before he found one that worked.
2) Regarding the air pump: I'm not sure, but I know my '86 5.0 EFI was smog-equiped for California with the air pump, etc., and I think there were models produced for other areas without the smog pump/hoses.

They may have all worked for you, just the rod might have been too short for your system.

The way it looks to me, is that I THINK it had been removed, although I can't really be sure, as I don't know the history of the engine....pluging the EGR with a nickle might be promising I suppose....I'll try it in the morning to see...

I didn't plug the egr with the nickle, although I suppose you could do that also if you wanted to disconnect the egr. I used the nickle to shim up the probe from the sensor a little bit so it stop sending the "egr value too low" code.

Also, my 86 was sold in NJ and it has an air pump, cats, the whole bit.

Well yea, I meant to say "slide" it under the sensor...its not plugged at that point, but if it falls off, it should'nt hurt anything anyway.....

Yep Reamer has gotten (finally!) a fix on this weird 31 code.........but mine is missing the air pump and tubes to the exhaust, so its still a 31. But its driveable.

I was gonna say...should we call you Nickle-Mobile now?

As for those with the air pumps removed or non-functioning. The air pumps and other smog crap ties into your cam-shaft, intake, carb,(injectors) and many other fuel-related mechanical parts. If any one of these isn't functioning properly, you'll be getting codes up the ying-ynag until you replace them all. You could simply change out the cam, and carb/intake, providing your state/province's emission's laws allow for it, and eliminate the code problems that way as well, and enjoy a bit more power to boot.

Thanks for moving this up so I could see it. I finally found it when I got the search function to work for me. I will check this out also but don't think it's going to help me for two reasons. 1. I ordered this truck new and have been it's only owner and I don't let others work on it unless I'm available and so far this has only been for factory recalls. 2. I am highly doubtful this is causing my present problem which appears to ba an irratic significant loss of fuel or fire. However it will be easy enough to check based on the information provided here. Thanks.
