Unhappy Fixing Guages(Help!!!)

I have a couple guage problems here to say the least. My speedometer doesnt work.My truck has dual gas tanks and even though I know the front tank aint full and no where near it,it reads past full when reading the front tank and past empty when reading the back tank. Also I dont think my odometer works.(Great I know...Shes a beaut.)

I got this truck about two months ago and since I am not old enough to drive I just drive it around the yard and not much at that.Once or twice a day most.I havent put gas in the rear tank the whole time I have had it so the rear tank reading might be correct but the front tank I know is wrong. What could possibly be wrong there?

When I say the speedometer doesnt work I mean it does not move at all. What could be wrong there?

Last but not least the odometer...You guessed it...Here it comes...What could be wrong there?I think thats all of the bad ones.(hopefully)

Ugg...Lots of problems.Thanks in advance.

Ron

The front tank either has a short in the circuit or a break in a wire. Check the fuel tank selector in the dash - that's the most common. It's also possible for the selector switch itself to go out.

The rear sounds like a float with a hole in it. The float in the rear tank isn't a very good design.

The speedometer is mechanical. The cable might be broken, or it could have slipped off the back of the speedo or off the tailshaft of the tranny. The speedo drives the odometer, so once you fix one, the other will be ok.

Good luck!

Thanks andym. That will help alot.Just one thing.Like I said there might just be no gas in the rear tank.So should I try to put,say 10 bux, worth of gas into the rear fuel tank and see if it reads?I though of that but havent done it yet because I heard that the rear fuel tank dumps into the front one if the front one is not full.Is that true?Mine is a 1988 F150 Custom 4x4 if that matters.

It shouldn't do that, but there was a factory recall on some trucks where Ford screwed up the plumbing for the fuel system. If you look, there are a lot of posts about people with fuel tanks overflowing because the return line for one tank goes to the other.

The only way to find out is to put a couple bucks in and try it.
