My check engine light came on on my 97 f-150 4x4 so went to auto zone and they pulled code and said it was the EGR valve or possible line going to EGR valve was plugged. So i pulled the line from the exhaust manifold to EGR and checked it,it was not stopped up. Is there any other way to check the EGR valve to see if it is bad other then just swapping it out. I disconected battery after i did the line but after driving a few miles the light came back on. What is strange the 2 times the light came on is when we turned the defrost blower on while driving, may just be coinstence.
I have seen cheaper ones at autozone and such and they will work fine. pull the vacum line of the egr valve and put a vacum on it, you should hear it pop open and it should hold the vaccum. If it does then the egr is good and the intake is prolly plugged up with carbon. Start the engine and remove the vacum line and pump the egr again, when the egr opens the engine should at least sputter or prolly die. if so yo know the egr ports in the intake are not plugged, if it keeps running normally then the egr ports are plugged. I have the same problem I have been told that you can get to the port to clean them by removing the fuel injectors but I have decided to live with the sel and not worry about the enviroment.
Sorry about not listing engine size its a 5.4 triton and i'm going to try what you said I may do like you said if the ports are clogged and live with it. I will post what i find out.
