Brake questions

My 98 F-150 super cab 4x4 has "mushy" brakes. I searched a few articles, and figured that I needed to hit the e-brake a few times to get the rear brakes self-adjusted again. It helped a little, but, here's what my symtoms are.

I can use the e-brake and it slows down better than with just the regular brake pedal.

If I use the e-brake, AND the brake pedal, only then does it feel like it stops the way it should.

What direction should I take?

How's the condition of the brake pads? Any signs of leaks?

Brake Fluid

First I would check the pads if you havent yet. Also look a the rubber lines to make sure they dont expand at all when someone mashes on the break pedals. If that isn't it then, is your brake fluid starting to turn a greenish color? If so it is starting to absorb moisture. My brakes were starting to feel a bit mushy. I got a bleeder kit from autozone for 10 dollars. Then get a turkey baster and get all the fluid you can out of the master cylinder, fill it with fresh fluid. Then hook the hose from the bleeder bottle up to the bleeder valve crack the bleeder and pump away till you see clear fluid, do this to all 4 tires and see if it feels better. I had a mechanic tell me that newer abs systems act really bad to old break fluid becaus break fluid absorbs moisture after a while. My mom has a 99 pontiac grand am that had mushy brakes too and I did the same thing and it fixed it too.

here's something I've begun to notice which might help. The brakes seem to feel better the colder it is out side, and the colder the brakes are. Seems to get worse the longer I drive, or the warmer it is.
