Got a Sand Blaster today

I got a sand blaster today for my b-day. Its a Craftsman, with a 50lbs tank. Does anyone reuse their sand? My uncle told me to buy white silica sand. Is it ok to reuse the sand? I have plenty of rust to blast on my 82 F100. I'll prolly blast the frame in the spring, since its getting to cold to do it now. Fred

Run it thru a window screen. Use a good mask when you blast. You don't want to be inhaling the dust.

reuse only if you run it through a screen.

Re-used sand will be less effective than when first used but can save you a little money though I wouldn’t reuse it if it has been exposed to grease and oil, which is common on many jobs.

As mentioned by Mike W., be sure to wear a good respirator, as the dust will be much worse the second time around.

Another helpful tip is to use a water trap where the air supply enters the blasting tank.

Each time you use the sand it will fracture. Eventually it will become dust and useless. There are many kinds of blasting media; Sand, steel shot. glass beads and believe it or not, crushed walnut shells.

I've got a set up that funnels the used media through a screen into a second bucket to be reused. I've attached a pair of welding magnets to the inside of the funnel so to pick up any metal particles. It took some trial and error, but I was also able to set up a dust collector (shop vac) that would grab airborne dust and not much media (silica sand).
