Are you sure the gauge is okay. Have manual that describes using flashlight, 2 D cell type, or something simular, only want approx. 5 volts across gauge. Take top off flashlight and take a wire from one side of gauge and connect to positive side of flashlight, and the other lead of gauge to negative side of flashlight. Can use the metal strip on the on off button of flashlight for neg. side. Should get a full indication on gauge. May also want to check the ground wire at the tank. Another test is to disconnect wire at tank and touch momentarily to ground. If get an indication then sending unit is faulty.
WIZZARD, that depends if you have a F-100 or a F-250/350. F-100 is 18 gallons, the F-250/350 is 17 gallons and there were no optional tanks for that year. Carl......o&o>........
Hey Carl, Are your sure about that? Ford built two tanks, to fit in the same cab, with the same seat? I had not heard that before and I read these boards everyday. I don't have the big book set to check it.
Jowilker, that was from a 65-80 Chilton's book. The manual for the 69 F-250 stated 19.5 gallons. I ran by the gauge for years and refilled between 15-16 gallons, didn't know i had more until i replaced the sender and hose from tank to frame. Carl........o&o>..............
guage works but i found that at 3/4 full acording to the gaude i still put in 6.3 gal. so if it holds 18gal. it shouldve read closer to 1/2 than a lil over 3/4. i ges as i get older im findin myself getin things perfect instead of just making it look cool and goin fast!!
Don't mean to argue on this issue, but I kinda suspect that is one of those items that is printed but no one has ever pulled one and compaired. Having been around these trucks I have a hard time with two tanks only one gallon different volumn.
I don't think I have owned one that the guage read correct anyways. Once the one in my truck gets between a half and quarter, I had better start hunting, cause the E is coming fast.
Hi, You might check the voltage regulator on the back of the guage cluster. Mine was irradic It would read full until I got to a 1/2 or less then start dropping. I put in 4 sending units and was going to put in a new guage when I found a full 12 volts going to the old one. $30.00 for a new regulator and its working great.
Best as I can tell from 65 Ford truck shop manual is on certain F, N, and T series trucks with the cab mounted tanks the fuel capacity is 18 gals. The standard fuel tank for the F series 'cowl models', or P series trucks is mounted on insulated brackets located inside the frame side rail and has fuel capacity of 17 gals. There are also saddle, cylindrical, and rectangular, etc but are all outside mounted tanks.
