Another Tranny issue

I ran into another weird thing Sat afternoon. Ken was coming over to the house to work on his truck. I backed my truck out of the drive so he could pull in.

I noticed something weird...the clutch was pressed down to the floor(disengaged) but it was still engaged. I had to press on the brake as hard as I could to get it to stop. I let the clutch out and it killed the engine. I started it back up and the clutch engaged but I couldn't get into any gears. Reverse would grind when I tried to shift into it.

I pumped the clutch a couple times and it worked fine. I parked it in the street, worked on Ken's truck and then moved my truck back into the drive (having Ken wait just in case I needed to push it up the driveway.) It worked just fine. No problems at all. Every gear engaged perfectly.

I talked to Duane last night and he thinks it the slave cylinder (of course the only thing I didn't replace when I had the tranny out last time ). I kept thinking about it last night and remembered that I never replaced the tranny fluid I lost when taking the tranny out and putting it back in.

Could that be the problem? How do I check the fluid level? There is no dip stick to check it. I know I can put it in at the tranny but how do I know if it is enough? or to much?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Jon

Usually you have 2 plugs on the side of the tranny. One close to the top and one close to the bottom. Take the one out of the top and add fluid til it comes out of the hole. BUT I don't think that is your problem, What you described is exactly how a Slave Cyl. acts when it is getting bad but you said it hasn't done it since you pumped it up. If you disconected the lines for the slave when removing the tranny you should have bled the system just like you would on your brakes. It sounds to me like you had a cavitation some where in the system with a bubble in it and it finnaly made it's way up to the master. It's probly gone by now but to be on the safe side I would bleed the system. Later dude.

Duane,

I bleed the system good....or I think it was good enough...LOL. Should I get back under there and try to bleed it again.

What type of tranny fluid do I need with my 5spd?

Thanks,
jon

Jon,
I agree with Duane it sounds like you had a air buble in the system. By pumping it you probably worked it out but if the same thing happens again I would look at bleeding the system again.

Yeah 96 was the last year they really had "problems" with the slave cyl.'s on them. That's not to say it isn't the problem, but it isn't likely. If it does it again lemme know and I can come over and give ya an extra hand (or foot lol).
