Internet dial up connection help

I have had two phone lines for several years. I recently lost my job and we decided to drop the line we have always used just for dialup.

I used to always dial up at 49.3 Kbps on the other line. Now it hooks me up between 26 and 45 Kbps. I am calling the same number I have always called.

Is there a reason for this?

Mike

I suspect that the line you went on has multiple phones. When you had your dedicated modem line, the two wires that your computer used went directly to the phone company box outside. When you switched to just one pair to run phone and internet the modem was faced with with multiple splices in the line. This will cause a little signal loss and the modem will make up for it by slowing down to make sure it gets all the packets.

Check to make sure the phone line is clean and your not hearing static. My main phone line only has static when it rains so my dialup speeds were all over the place. Also, the connection speed number is only a handshake, and actual connection speeds will fluctuate during the course of the call, so it could start slow and get faster or vice versa.

Maybe there has been a change in the amount of Dial-up computers in your locale ?

THat's what I was told when I saw a difference in transfer speed.

There was something else someone mentioned & I can't think of it right now.
If I remember,I'll place it here.

the best way to fix dial up problems is to get a cable modem.

you can usually get cable with tv cable, or a modem just by itself and it doesnt cost too much a month.

If I lived in civilization it would be a no brainer.

Only other option is satelite and it is 1K for the equipment and 65 bucks a month.

I feel that, man. Satellite Internet prices are ridiculous. I live out in the country too. The reason for your connection loss could be the actual phone line. If you live in rural are, the phone line will have multiple digital/analog conversions. This limits your speed to v.34 (26.4, 28.8, 33.6). I know, it sucks
