When I accellerate then let off the gas, I sometimes get this rattling sound and I'm almost certain it's coming from the air cleaner assembly, to the air filter. The assembly snorkle has a circular thing on top of it that I think controls the slats inside, but I'm only guessing.
The round thing is a vacuum motor that moves the air door at the end of the air filter housing snorkle. When the engine is cold, the door should be closed to force the engine to draw air up through the hot air tube (which seems to be missing on your truck). The tube connects from the bottom of the snorkle to the heat stove mounted over the exhaust manifold (it looks like the stove is missing too). The motor requires a vacuum source and it also appears that the hose that supplies that is also missing. First I would try to hook vacuum up to the hot air system and see if that stopps the rattling.
It seem's as tho it is also missing the fresh air intake hose. The sensor on the side of the air cleaner is missing 2 of the vaccum line's as well, might want to figure out where all the vaccum connection's have gone to, are they plugged up with cap's? Or are they open? Still got all the pollution equipment hooked up? Wow, haven't seen that in a looong time.
Thanks for all the help. I think I can find everything I need to make her complete except the shroud that bolts in on the exhaust manifold. Anyone know a source for those? I called a bunch of salvage yards in my area but no one has one.
Also, in the pic I posted, there are two intakes on the air filter assempbly, just to the left of the snorkle. What hoses go in there? I found one vacum hose hanging off the Air bypassvalve (to VDV?). Does that plug in there? What goes in the other inlet?
the continuing saga of rattling for those of you who enjoy reading about a Ford truck newbie learning where everything goes in and around the engine...
I went to a salvage yard and got a fresh air intake, got the metal sleeve for the heat riser and hooked those up. I also got a Fuel Tank Vapor separator and put that in. Then I replaced the air filter box and hooked up a bunch of lines.
So I started up the truck and the noise is worse! Sounded like a bunch of metal clanking around.
Then I stuck my head in closer and it sounded like the rattling was coming from the air bypass valve and it vibrated with the sound, so I took that off. Still got the sound when I started it up.
Then I took off the little belt to the air supply pump and it STOPPED!
All that and I didn't grab a pump from the salvage yard so I bought a new one today. Unfortunately I cut the belt, so I've got to figure out how to put that belt on. Do I have to pull everything off the fan assembly? Would that be a good time to put a new seal in the front of the engine (there's a small oil leak)
It looks like replacing this pump won't be all that hard.
Plus I've got all my pollution control stuff, I think... Gotta smog it by the end of the month. Man, this is fun, my new hobby. I've got a 1964 Cadillac and parts are a LOT easier to get for the F-150.
