Help on a question re intake manifolds. My nephew just bought a 2000 F-150 4.6 with a 5 speed. I was reading on the net that the 4.6 had problems with the plastic intake manifold leaking coolant and that the manifold should be replaced with a new one that has aluminum at the front. Does his truck have all plastic. (I will have to e mail my brother to ask, they live 300 miles away) and should it be changed before a problem or not worry about it. And .. Do any of the forum sponsors sell aftermarket manifold? And do they use this manifold on the 5.4 engine also. Thanks for any help here.. Mojave

Reason: Ahh spelling
I'm not aware of any issues reguarding the composite intake manifolds on the 4.6's or 5.4's. With the 4.6's you have the option on aluminum intakes but I belive the expense of the swap will outweigh the benefits unless you are looking into some serious perfomance build.
I looked on E-Bay and they sell aftermarket manifold kits with the front water jacket part made of aluminum for $275-$300 as an upgraded stock replacement. I have been told that all new 4.6s from Ford 2001 and newer have the front part made of aluminum. Still learning here. Should we not worry unless we have a problem??
I have never heard of many problems with this, so I'd wait for some symptoms of a bad manifold before going out and replacing it. There are many other issues that are much more likely to come up, and most of them are easy fixes.
Plastic intakes only came on cars. Trucks all have aluminum manifolds.
Thanks Arkie, I am 300 miles away from my brothers house and haven't seen my nephews truck yet. I knew that the plastic was used on the Vic's and I think some of the SUVs. I have driven lot's of miles in Ford trucks but my experience is with the older pushrod motors and I don't know so much yet about the modulars. I do know the good old 360s and 390s couldn't be killed. I tried... lol
