I have a question for you guys with 2005 F 150's, particularly ones that have the Lariat SCREW 4x4s.
Are you guys experiencing any of the classic '04 problems, ie, vibrations, clunks, shimmys, rear end shudders, ac problems etc.? Or is it too early to tell yet? I'd love to know if Ford got a handle on these problems for the new model year.
I have an 05 FX4 SCREW and don't have any of the problems you listed. I do have a rattle in the passenger side door that sounds like a loose window track but that is all I have noticed so far.
I had to have the TSB that covered the vibration problems with the '04s, worked on my truck. So far so good I'm happy to say. Nothing sucks worse than spending $40,000 on a crappy truck!
It can't be a design defect, if so then everybody would have vibrations, clunks, shimmys, rear end shudders, ac problems etc. Over 100000 F150 04' sold and I see only a less than 100 TSB pertaining to this topic.
I could only conclude after reading other forumns that the problem only can exist with a time period/manufacture plant. My estimate of maybe 200-300 trucks could only have these problems. This is another example of bad fuel tanks.
I bought my new 2004 FX4 SuperCrew 5 days ago. It had an August 24, 2004 build date. After 300 miles I can understand why some people complain about "vibration". However, I think a lot of the vibration complaints are due to the new engineering of the frame and shock placement. The '04 frame is 9 times stiffer than the previous design. The frame has less flex and resists twisting over rough surfaces. The shocks being mounted outside the frame help to lessen body roll. The result is a more stable ride with quicker rebound ("vibration"?) over rough surfaces.
Due to frame flex and shocks placed near the center of the truck, the previous design would rock and roll harder over rough surfaces (I owned 2 F150 4X4's: a 1998 F150 and a 2001 F150) due to slower rebound. In addition, the previous model would bounce and hop left or right over rough surfaces, forcing you to counter steer the truck back on track.
I am sure there are some people that have had serious vibration problems with their 2004 F150's due to defective parts (unbalanced drive shafts, defective rear differentials, bad shocks, bad rotors, etc). You can find similar problems with the majority of first year (new or redesigned model) vehicles. Those things tend to be worked out with the independant parts suppliers as complaints, warranty repairs and recalls mount.
I love the ride of my '04. It is the best truck I have ever owned. Serious pot holes and railroad tracks feel like a series of quick (front wheels, back wheels) vibrations you can barely feel in the steering wheel and seat. My old trucks would bouce me all over the place driving over the same pot holes and railroad tracks. I will take vibrations over bouncing any day.
I can only speak from my personal experience and what I've read on this forum about technical service bulletins concerning vibration problems. I would say there are a whole lot more than 200 to 300 trucks with these problems, considering my dealership alone has fixed vibration problems on 23 trucks in the six monthe since I've owned mine.
Design flaw or not, you are luckier than a lot of 2004 F150 owners, not to have any of these problems.
DWEELER: I asked my dealership Saturday when I took it in for the 5K checkup. They were of the issues (I asked about the shimmys, rear end, vibrations, A.C) , but no trucks have came in with these problems, only for maintenance checkups. They have more issues with the older F150's.
Rebell: The number is just an analysis based on forums I read and the small number of compaints and TSBs. It is an estimate, I will be surprised if it is over 300 trucks that are affected.
I have had my 2005 Lariat SCrew 4x4 for about a little over a week now and I love it. I sold my 2003 F350 6.0 to buy the SCrew and this is by far a better built truck!

I still have my F350 6.0 and I will agree the supercrew lariat is a better built truck, as far as fit and finish, wind noise, exc. However, the power is no comparison to the diesel and the lack of a 5 speed auto is very noticable after the 1-2 shift. I end up driving the Supercrew more around town but when it comes time to haul a load the 6.0 powerstroke is king.
