intake resonator chamber

There was a posting mention removing the intake resonator chamber so that it can get more air in. Can someone tell me what the intake resonator chamber looks like? Is it a part near my air box ? I want to try removing it, but I don't know which one it is.

It should be a horn looking plastic piece that is at the inlet of the air box. If you remove it, it will leave a larger hole for air to pass thru into the air box.

The resonator is behind the fender liner on the driver's side near the front. It's attached with one bolt. You don't need to remove or loosen anything under the hood.

Removal of Intake Resonator Chamber

I would also like to remove the intake resonator chamber. But it sounds a lot easier than it actually is. I cant get it out, removed all bolts but the fuse box and wires are in the way. Can anyone tell me how to get it out?

also another question, are there any downsides to removing the resonator? and let me say that added noise is a good thing to me.

I have nothing to do today and finally decided to took out the intake resonator chamber. I don't hear any difference in terms of noise level.

Easttytycoon, you don't take the resonator out from under your hood. The way I do it is take out left front tire, unscrew the little screws and 3 bolts that holds the cheap fender. Gently pull down the front half of the fender (you don't necessary need to take the whole fender out). In front of the fender, you will see the intake resonator. Unscrew a bolt and take it out, then you will see the big hole.

did it

Cool. I did do it. On cold start ups I do notice the added noise, but it does quiet down once warm. I do notice a couple more miles per tank since I took it off. It's easier to see the improvement since I do alot of highway driving.

My 2001 Ranger seemed noiser cold after removing the resonator, but a weird noisy like tinny. Havn't had it off long enough to see about mileage improvement. Power seems as good as before and it may be louder when I wind it up good rowing through the gears.

Oops, duh. very old thread. Oh well.

UPDATE: My ranger seemed sluggish and so I put the resonator back on and low end and midrange power are much better. Seems like it is more important in the summer as I did not notice the power loss in winter weather.
