If the guage cluster has been swapped out at some point, then the odometer reading would be that of the new cluster, not the actual reading for the truck (unless it was done the "right" way at a dealership). A couple of guys I know (with chevys) rigged up a switch that basicly turns off the power to the guages and the odometer. They turn if off on long trips and the miles are never recorded by the computer.
Carfax says that I've been duped. It's only 20K miles, so I'm not going to make a stink about it, but is there anyway I can proove it? How would this be done?
Tedhead a couple of questions: Did you buy from a private party or dealer? I am guessing that the Carfax mileage is less than what was shown when you bought the rig. I think what you have is a case of someone misreading the odometer and not tampering. Federal law requires the mileage shown on the vehicle's odo be put in the proper place on the Title at time of transfer. I have done the DMV paperwork for a used car dealer for the last two years and believe me mistakes are made everyday on just about everything due to inattention and haste to complete the deal. If you feel the need for some type of restitution then contact your local DMV office for assistance.
when working at a carwash i saw several lincoln limos who had straight lines across instead of numbers on their odometers. one driver said they pull a certain fuse and it keeps the mileage down for warranty work.
When we sold our last house, the state trooper that purchased it got a U-haul to use, for free. He let us borrow it to make a trip across town and the entire gauge cluster was dead, that way the U-haul dealership wouldn't have to show the miles.
