Okay, I want to get rid of the factory tape deck, and decide to put in an old cd player I got lying around, until I can afford a new one. I hook up all the power wires, and it powers up fine. Now to sort thru the speaker wires....WTF? No sound....and i know the stereo works. Someone else I know had this prob with a Ford van, and same factory stereo set up. Any one else have this prob.? It's an 87 Bronco.
Go to your local Electronic outlet store "bestbuy ect." look were they have the aftermarket decks.
Buy a Wiring adapter, they make them for all sorts of cars trucks.
It plugs into were the factory unit plugs into then wire the adaptor to your new deck EZ.
I believe Ford uses a common ground. Each speaker (front L, front R, etc...)
does not have it's own ground wire. I mean, it has one coming off the speaker itself but gets ran into a common ground on the wiring harness. And I'm not exactly sure how to identify which is the common out of the harness. I had my head unit installed just because I didn't want to screw it up. Are you using a harness adapter that clips into the factory harness? Or did you cut off the factory harness?
Take a small 9v battery, and touch the speaker wires to it. You should hear a crackling noise coming from them. That will let you know that they are good. Hook up accordingly to the harness to the stereo. It should be labeled.
the factory stereo works fine. even with the harness it doesn't work. there's 8 speaker wires, and 4 speakers. i'm trying to avoid having to cut the harness, but i may end up running my own speaker wires, but I really don't feel like doing that. I am also very adept at installing stereos. I always do my own, and this is the first time that I have ever had a prob. My Cougar has a Jensen Chaemelion deck, Jensen 6x9's in the rear, and an MTX amp in the trunk pushing 2 12" Kicker Comp VRs in a bandpass box. (boom, boom) lol

Run down to your local better autoparts (Checkers or Autozone) and buy a wiring harness kit. It will take away most of your troubles. It has a complete wiring diagram and all you have to do is buy the connections and hook'em up, They are not too expensive, like $8.00 or so. They are also labled on the wires, so you can hook them up to the CD player easily.
Also, about the 9 Volt trick, that is supposed to determine which plug is the postive or negative. The speaker will either move up or down, it depends on which terminal you're testing. That does not mean that they are going to function correctly.

are you sure that there is not two power wires to the deck and maybe you only have one hooked up, the one that is letting you power up but no amplifier.
