Well it was over charging and then running better when i took the Batt cable off while running. How ever it Died. I replace the coil and now i think it is the ignition modual .The onr on the right side fire wall. Is there a way to test it ?
I guess others were right DON'T remove the Batt cables while its running. !
new batt and yes im getting power to the coil. I posted befor about the over charging in a Diff post . But now since it Died im thinging from taking the cables of while running it killed the main box .?Not real sure at this point im going to get one from a junk yard and try it .
Yes, it is a common failure mode.
Black goo seeping out the back it a tell tale sign.
You need three things to make spark on this truck. (besides a battery!)
Module, Coil, and a good pickup in the distributor. The Coil and pickup can be tested with a VOM... get the book on your truck. But I am betting on the module in your case.
No battery + engine running = free floating alternator > high voltage > dead electronics.
GL
I just got a new one and just did a contnuity test on some of the leads . on the one i took out .It is grounding out on 2 of the leads but not on the new one. So i will find out in a few hours . But i think that was it.I was allso told that some one hooked up the batt cables backwards in the truck so im sure that didnt help. DUH .lol

89Broncobob,
This sounds like A alternator problem to me. You should be able to remove the battery cable with the engine running.
"WARNING!!! This is theoretical only - in actual practice, the voltage surges resulting from disconnecting the battery can seriously damage the regulator circuitry. All alternator manufacturers strongly advise NOT doing this! This test will not prove the functionality of the alternator anyway, as the engine may still run with a weak alternator output."
