i have a 1986 6.9 diesel & was wondering what engines i could put back in as a replacement without major modifications-i've heard i could use a 7.3-does that include turbo engines as well?-i see this category is 94 & back;does that mean i could not put a 95 or newer engine in?--thanks in advance for any help guys
the 7.3 (naturaly aspirated or turbo) will fit right in there. Newer than the late 94 is a power stroke and is a fly by wire engine. No mechanical linkage.
www.fordcummins.com has conversion kits to put in a 12 valve mechanical 5.9 Cummins. the cummins were turbocharged and give a lot more room side to side for other junk because of the I-6.
If you want to stay traditional I would suggest the 7.3 turbo IDI or put a turbo on one. Ive heard the 6.9s are oil burners.
Lots of choices
It has to be an IDI engine. I have the 7.3 turbo in my 86. I love it.
Something to consider, just because Ford did not use the engine in their pickups any more does not mean Navistar quit making them.
I did have one reman engine that the paperwork showed as a 1996 7.3 IDI turbo motor as far as original manufacture date. Have no idea what it was in before I had it though.
