Hey Guys,
I found a 71 Merc, 429 c-6, for $500.00 , and I am considering swapping motors.
My 70 swb has a tired 390, and a weak c-6. another buddy of mine claims he has the motor mounts that will fit. I question the oil pan, but I also know Ford installed 460 in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, same motor group, right?
The merc runs, and I am hoping to clean/tune up the motor before removing it from the car.
I've got a 460 in my 71 SWB and it is a blast. I in a rebuild right now to up the power a little. If I remimber correctly it has a front sump pan. You might want to ask in the 460 forrum.
I have a 73 F 100. I bought a 70 model with a 460 and c6. Every thing bolted right up, it gets 12 mpg, and is a ton of fun. A 429 and 460 are the same block, so no worries there. As ak429 said, this isn't something that you can just throw together on the cheap. Some things to watch out for are the oil pan as already mentioned. Also, the alternator bracket and right hand manifold from a car won't work in a truck. The alternator bracket will have the alternator rubbing the right frame rail. The exhaust manifold from a car can be made to work if you notch the frame rail with a torch. I would never do it to my truck, but I have seen it done. The exhaust manifold on the right side needs to come from a truck or a van, and not a car. As far as the brackets are concerned. They need to all come from the same engine and you need to get the whole set including the crank and water pump pulleys. Again, the set needs to come from a truck or van. Do you plan on adding A/C or power steering? If so, I would recomend buying the brackets and pulleys from a 74 to 79 model truck. There are some differences in the P/S pump from 74 to 79, but as long as you have the complete set of brackets and pulleys you can get a rebuilt pump for a truck the year model of your brackets and bolt it right on. I think I spent about 1500 going from a 390 and 4 speed to the 460 and c6 in my truck. This includes the motor and tranny, headers, brackets and pulleys, drive shaft, and exhaust system. Let me know if you have any specific questions, I'd be thrilled to let you know any thing that I can. By the way, When I put the 460 in I added P/S, and electronic ignition. If you want to know how to do it, holler. Good luck. Mike
