I have a 90 F-150 with an e4od transmission. I was wondering if it would be possible to install a hammer shifter, because I see that they don't make one for it. I am curious if I could use the one for the C-6, becuase I have heard that the e4OD is basically a C-6 with an overdrive. Will this work or not?
The E in E40D stands for electronically shifted. The shift lever controls a rheostat that in turn is read by the powertrain control computer. The trans is shifted by sending electrical signals to a set of solenoids. There is no hard linkage to the trans.
The C6 is shifted hydraulically. The shift lever connects to a mechanical rod arrangement that moves a shuttle valve in the trans.
The C6 shifter will not work at all with the E40D. It might be possible to adapt the Mustang AODE version of this shifter, but definitely not the C6 version.
