1999 250 CC V-10 4X4. 121,000 miles. Couple days ago started making wat I thought was a simple clunking sound when going over bumps. Figured loose shock/spare tire/something easy to simply tighten down. Looked high and low...didn't find anything. Next day progressed to a clunk followed by the "whirring" noise so often associated with a dry U-joint or bad U-joint when going over bumps, and occasionally even when not going over bumps. AHA...simple fix. Replaced teh rear two U joints....no change. Was planning on replacing the remaining one on the rear driveshaft, but decided to try something first. When I lock it in 4 wheel high...sound stops. Disengage back to 2 hi...next bump comes back. Tried it a couple times same result. Tells me it is not the u joint, because regardless of whether in 2 or 4 that shaft is going to be spinning. Must be something else. Front wheel bearing that when power is applied and has a load quiets down? Front driveshaft? Shouldnt be spinning in 2 wd with lock outs on free should it? So it shouldnt be anything there. Looked for anything rubbing teh driveshaft etc when going over bumps...nothing.
Ideas? It is a very disticntive sound that I can only equate to a dry U joint...but why would it stop in 4WD if that's what it was?
Never mind. Found it. Manually locked in the passenger front hub, rattle and other noise stopped. Now just need to find the time to tear it out and see what's up.
Apparently not a bearing problem otherwise it would do it all the time, must just be the hub. Read in the past of a good set of replacement hubs, maybe now is the time. I'll do a search and see what was reccomended.'
