I have a Scotty manual downrigger and I was woundering if anyone here has any experence with the use of a downrigger and could help me. The question I have is how far up from the weight should I attach the line. I'm going away this week and I would like to use the downrigger. Thanks for any help.
Last time I used a downrigger the line clip was attached pretty close to the weight. I would think you would it pretty close because your not looking for a presentation, but for a method to get the line down to a specified depth.
Ahh, now that's real fishin; draggin a bunch of tin around a lake until you snag something or find a fish dumb enough to bite. Anyways, here on the great lakes most everyone hooks the realease right on the ball. I dunno if the B.C. fish are any more skittish or not though....
When we go fishing we usually attach the line about 3 feet or so above the downrigger ball. It's not really scientific.. we just let the weight down so its about a foot under the water and then attach the line up close to the head of the downrigger with the clip.
Ps- where are you going fishing? We used to go fishing every year in BC and camp at the Duncan Cove resort off of Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast. I love it up there.. its so pretty, not to mention some great fishing! Dang.. now i want some fresh lingcod.. :P

I'm going Sheridan lake. I have a cabin there. It's in the interior. I don't know if I'll use the downrigger much, but its on a custom mount with the rod holders so I have it if I decide to use it.
To answer your question, I usually run it up a couple of feet. I don't like the wake vorticies messing with lure presentation. Then again, I usually run the bait back about 30 feet as well.
put your release right off the weight, run 35 feet or so back if your trolling for salmon , and 5 to 10 feet if your trolling for lake trout. and from there, just experiment.
I agree with the two to three feet above your down ball. I run my set-ups about 35 feet back for salmon as well as trout and Kokanee on most occassions. You can use a stacker and run a second set-up farther up in the water column and experiment with flashers vs dodgers and distance from your downrigger cables and see what works the best.

I put my line clips next to my *****. Then I cast out 20 to 35ft of line and attach it to the line clip, then drop it to the desired depth.Once at the desired depth,I then add a slider, which is basically a 6ft leader with a lure on one end and a swivel on the other.simply clip it to the line and drop it in and it will slide down the line as you are trolling. Oh yeah, one other thing, instead of using a release or line clip,a rubber band tied to the line and then slipped around your ***** works great also. But you will need to experiment a little with the rubber bands. One that is not strong enough will lead to premature release And one that is too strong will lead to frustration and no release.
