Going Topless?
Has anyone out there ever cut off the roof of an F150? No, not for replacement, I mean make your truck a convertible.
I’ve done the rocker and door pillar repairs, patched the floor and rebuilt the bed. What I’m left with is a complete OK looking ’89 F150C 4x4 that is ready for final prep and paint. And just like every other project of mine, just before completion, I get another idea.
Could I cut off the roof and reconfigure it to be a removable top?
I’ve got rough ideas and sketches about what to do for the mating surfaces, an internal roll bar and how to handle the door window frames. I even have a plan for an aluminum framed soft top that could be stored behind the bench seat. <o =""></o>
What I don’t know is will the cab be able to support itself with the roof cut off? <o =""></o>
Years ago, I had a ’70 Blazer. The moment I unbolted the fiberglass top, the body bent badly out of shape. In order to make the roof and windshield frame align, I had to floor jack the back end up. <o =""></o>
If the cab can hold up, I think I could actually make this happen, but if someone out there already knows I’m about to ruin a decent truck, please speak up. Thanks.
