89 302 sensor behind intake ?

Hey Guys,

What is the two-wire sensor tapped into the block on the pad just behind the intake on a 89 f-150 302 ? Does it tap into the lifter oil gallery ?
Can this sensor be placed somewhere else ? I am R&R a crate motor which is not drilled and tapped. I sure don't want to drill and risk dropping shavings in if I can help it.

Thanks in advance

Kemicalburns,

Thanks. It's going into a 89 F-150 which is basically just a parts-getter and back up vehicle. A knock-sensor ? I noticed it was dry (no oil) on it's probe, yet it looked as if it was going to the lifter oil passage.

As long as it is threaded into the block or intake manifold, it should be ok. It doesn't have to contact oil or anything.

EPNCUSU2006,

Thanks. This is the first SD 302 I've worked on amd had never encountered the Knock Sensor. I guess (?) that it can tap in anywhere (dry) into block so that tit can sense the tap/shake of a pre-ignition knock to adjust SD accordingly. For that matter I guess it could be left connected hanging and hoked up with the loss od SD adjustments for pinging .

Has anyone just drilled a 'dry' hole and installed the sensor ? I guess this is what I'll do.
I appreciate these basic yet very helpful replys !

Either method would work - tying it up or drilling/tapping a hole. As long as it is plugged in electrically, it won't set any codes or cause any drivability issues, other than not being able to sense knocking and retard timing.
