Has anyone simply swapped the original 6V gen for a 12V one from an early 60's car truck instead of going to an alternator? I would like to keep my flathead in my 50 F-1 LOOKING more stock. An alternator mounted on top would deffinitely look out of place.
Any input on how many amps could be coaxed out of an upgraded one?
Yes. I did just that, put a 12v genny on. I had a 'selection' of Ford gennys and took a dual pulley unit with a longer case than a similar car unit. I can dig up a part # if you need it.Took it to a rebuilder to get cleaned, turned and rebrushed. About $40 well spent. Good threads here warned about just slapping on an as-is genny when you intend to run Pertroix or other electronic gooides- they toast if that gennny arcs
I know I get 30+A out of it . THe halogen headlights are fab now.
I assume that you are converting all to 12V. Fomoco 12V generators were in the 35-45A region unless you found a donor with full power options such as a Lincoln; up to ~60A were available. Be sure that your new 12V regulator is rated to handle the full output of the genny.
You can also take your 6V unit into any electrical motor shop and have 12V field coils installed; the armature does not require changing; figure on about 35A peak output.
