I have an 86 ford with the 5.0 302 efi. I am putting a new engine in it 351 efi out of a 96 ford.Tdistributor connection are different and i need to know whick wire is to what on the distributor because they are different colors on my truck than on the distributor. I am just going to cut off the old one on my truck, and put a new connector on it.
I don't have a new computer because my 351 has a 302 firing order and should work on my 302 computer.
Your 302 EFI computer will not operate a 351 engine particularly well. The 86 computer was a speed-density, so it cannot self-adapt to the increase in displacement in the same way that a mass airflow arrangement might.
You would need a calibration meant for 351 cid or the engine will run too lean. Furthermore, your fuel injectors are probably undersized for 351 CID -- they are probably 19 PPH injectors. A factory 351 calibration, if you can find one, likely expects 21 or 24 pph injectors.
Undersized injectors and a "surprise" increase in displacement will result in the engine running way, way too lean, if it runs at all.
The 86 302 had the TFI on the distributor. Ford switched to the TFI on the fender liner after '91 (due to reliability problems). The connections, harness, and distributor bodies are totally different.
The swap you propose can be done, but it is a fairly "advanced" project. You really need the wiring diagram for both engines to succeed at this.
The stock 351 had 19lb injectors as well, so injector sizing is not an issue. You cannot simply cut the connector off your truck's harness to match up with the distributor out of the '96, as fefarms said. You need to find a 351 distributor with the TFI mounted on the distributor ('96 is remote mount TFI), then you will be able to use the harness originally in your truck. While it is best to get a 351 computer, the 302 computer will operate the 351, although not optimally. I think Kemicalburns is running a 351 on a 302 computer.
